Aftermath's of New Orleans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New Orleans city was now in shambles after the hurricance Katrina lashed the city in its fieriest form. I dont need to tell you how badly the city is affected but just wanted to make a comparison of this tragedy with Indian tragedies like tsunami and Mumbai floods. Still the number of people died from Katrina is not clear but its not going to be more that of tsunami.
What has astonished me is the total ineffiency of the US government in handling this tragedy. After the hurricane left, the city went into lawlessness and its in complete anarchy. The so called civilized citizens of US broke into the submerged shops and looted everything. The unaffected parts of the city also faced similar lootings, arson, rape and other violences which one normally sees in Africa.
When Mumbai got drenched in rains, its nearly 2-crore residents didnt resort to violence as a means to get relief from the inefficient Maharashtra government. I havent read any reports of looting in Mumbai either. Not all Mumbai residents are literates but they all had the heart to help out each others in distress during the rains. When tsunami struck TN, it recovered soon because of people efforts and due credits has to be given to TN CM Jayalalitha and Nagapattinam Collector Radha Krishnan for their speedy efforts. On the whole it is the collective initiative of the people and their bonding which we develop in our society in India helped us to recover from tsunami and Mumbai tragedies.
Unlike in India where one can socialize with neighbours, people to people contact is very minimum in US. So when a tragedy like Katrina occurs everyone runs helter-skelter and doesnt care about other persons in distress. People in US are always fixated to 911 and expect the govt to help them out every time. When the govt fails like it happened in New Orleans, anarchy breaks out. In this regard, I think people in India are all better equipped in dealing with such tragedies and are very much tolerant to governmental inefficiencies. Maybe US has to learn some lessons from India.......
